Next stop Matamata (Hobbiton). Yes, you LOTR fans will get the chance to have a picture in front of the Hobbiton sign before joining an optional Hobbiton tour. From here on in we turn up the adrenaline with an optional off-road safari and a lunch-time visit to Agroventures. Here you can Agrojet, Freefall Extreme, Schweeb or Swoop to your hearts content (you will find out more about these crazy inventions when you arrive!). We arrive into Rotorua by early afternoon where Maori culture and thermal activity combine to make a very unique destination. Upon arrival, you will be treated to a scenic tour of the city via the lake and government gardens before experiencing a heartfelt cultural welcome to the area. Next on the agenda is a tour of a local Greenstone (Pounamu) factory the sacred stone of NZ. Why not arrange a time to go back and design your very own memento of NZ. We then visit Whakarewarewa Village, a living Maori village with an abundance of culture and thermal activity on offer. Those choosing not to visit the village will get the chance to visit the stunning Redwood Forest. This evening, make sure you take the opportunity to try a superb Maori Hangi and Concert or relax in a hot pool - neither should be missed! We recommend you spend more than one night in Rotorua, as there is so much to do in this exceptional place. Approximate arrival into Rotorua is 4:30pm. By early afternoon we depart Waitomo and head towards Taupo. Our first stop is the mighty Huka Falls, throwing over 200,000 litres of water each second. Those in for an adrenaline rush will have the chance to try out the jet boat on the Huka river. For those wanting to experience one of the best thrills in NZ, Taupo is one of the most amazing places to skydive in NZ. From 15,000 feet you can see both coasts of NZ, just ask your driver to sort you out with a jump. For those not partaking in these adrenaline activities we continue onto Taupo, situated on the edge of a lake bigger than Singapore, in true Kiwi fashion this means there are heaps of things to do. Make sure you spend two nights here if you can to experience horse riding, kayaking or fishing on the lake, to name just a few options. Taupo is also the departure point to attempt the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Described as NZ's best one day trek you will need at least two nights in Taupo to undertake the walk that takes you into the heart of volcano country, Mt Doom. The nightlife in Taupo is outstanding, with many decent bars, cafes and restaurants to choose from. Approximate arrival time in Taupo is 4:30pm. In the afternoon, we arrive into Wellington, New Zealand's capital city, were we stop to view Parliament Buildings and 'The Beehive' before heading to the summit of Mt Victoria for some fantastic views across the city and Cook Strait. There's plenty to keep you busy here including lively cafes and don't miss a visit to Te Papa, the national museum. Approximate arrival time in Wellington is 4:00pm. Heading further north, via a number of NZ's picturesque pioneer towns we arrive in Mangatainoka. It feels like the middle of nowhere but is in fact the home of the nationally famous Tui Brewery. Try a beer or two here or wait until later in the day when you wine connoisseurs might want to indulge in some tastings in Hawkes Bay wine country. We arrive into Napier by early afternoon with plenty of time to explore the unique buildings, and perhaps a local winery or two. Due to a major earthquake in the 1930s, this city had to be rebuilt and is now referred to as “The Art Deco Capital of NZ”. Enjoy your stay in another unique Magic spot. Approximate arrival into Napier is 3:00pm. Accommodation suggestions: Jump off the tourist route today and stay at Hastings. ---------- Sector 15 - Napier - Taupo - Rotorua - Mt Maunganui/Tauranga Highlights:
Rotorua is also the departure point for two great Magic Connections the East EsCape, a minimum three day return trip, and the Waitomo Extension, a two day trip out to the caves - perfect for those who are finishing their journey in Auckland. Leaving Rotorua behind, we make a visit to Zorb - another very unique NZ adventure activity. Try it and you'll know why! The coach will then carry on to the north-east passing directly through the Magic Native Forest (where those of you partaking in volunteer work will be re-visiting), drop off any passengers staying in the wonderful Tauranga city and finally arrive in the chilled out beach town of Mt Maunganui arriving late afternoon. Many of our passengers like to stay a couple of days here to either relax or get involved in some of the many activities on offer including volunteer work, learning to surf or participate in the very special night-time kayaking to view glow-worms. Approximate arrival into Tauranga is 4:00pm. Approximate arrival into Mount Maunganui is 4:20pm. In Thames, those travelling to the Coromandel Peninsula can connect directly with the Coromandel coach and head on to visit some incredible native bush, a beach where the water is boiling hot and one of the most beautiful coves in New Zealand, read more on pages 71-79. For those who are heading on to Auckland, we continue on to meet the southern motorway and traverse the famous Bombay Hills and then deliver you back into the city via the scenic Mission Bay, Tamaki Drive, Sir Michal Joseph Savage lookout and drop off at Kelly Tarltons Antarctic Encounter & Underwater World. There will still be enough time to do some of the Auckland's other sights, such as jumping off the Skytower, bungy jumping from the harbour bridge or catching a ferry to a nearby island.
